Gone Green

A post over at the forums reminded me to tell ya'll I went green! haha

Yall know I'm only buying organic these days, I've mentioned that before, but now I've purchased the canvas shopping sacks for my groceries.

Yep, bought 20 sacks for 20 bucks. And the store I use them at takes off 5 cents of your purchase for every sack you bring in with you (5 sacks= $.25). Pretty soon they will pay for themselves.

I've also been tinkering with selling my gas guzzler for a hybrid. Husband's company will pitch in 3k for the purchase and I think you get a few K tax break as well (don't hold me to that though).

Anyway, I'm making life changes here and I'm happy about it.

What do you do to be environmentally friendly?

And what kinda hybrid would you get...that can tow you, your spouse, three kids plus 1 friend around? (right now I have third row seating)

Bought a Camry Hybrid this year. i read that the initial higher cost is supposed to pay for itself *eventually* (the key word there being "eventually"). Supposed to be fuel-efficient especially if most of your driving happens to be the inner city "stop-and-go" type. Does mine consume less fuel? Well, i've only had it about six months so far. i would tentatively say yes although to be honest i think it's still too early to claim that with any certainty. It's a very smooth drive. It's a very fun and enjoyable vehicle to drive. For me personally the only problem i had is related to the installation of its security system, which turned out to be incompatible with the Hybrid (long story that one). i had to have the security system uninstalled. You can e-mail me if you want more specific information.

That's good, Sobia. So where do you do your organic grocery shopping? Are you still able to afford gas to get you back home when you're done? Haha.

i too use reusable grocery bags and i do my part to buy local produce or organic produce when that is offered as an option (which in switzerland it usually is). The swiss have great tomatoes, apples, all kinds of lettuce. I really try more to eat local rather than organic and eat in season, but my only vice is bananas. So I buy those organic as they don't grow well in Switzerland :)

that's great! I do the same stuff essentially...try to use less...buy less, make more, use stuff twice etc.

That's really great, Sobia. We have been doing the same. We changed all the lightbulbs in the house long ago to those twirly ones (can't remember what they're called but they're better environmentally. LOL.)

My husband also traded in his car for a smaller fuel economy type.

We like small cars, so not much of a problem there. We are also slowly replacing all the lights bulbs with CFLs.

For various reasons, I am not a big fan of organic food. And it doesn't help that I see a lot more gas guzzlers in front of the local Whole Foods compared to Kroger or Publix.

Gandy, what's your reasons?

Mari, we do the shopping at our local grocery store and it's about 3x as expensive but the kids drink so much milk and juice I think it's worth it there atleast. ha ha or atleast I do at the moment. ha

Just out of curiosity….Do you know where I can get quality organic/vegan ingredients online? I am now trying to order from online stores only because of various reasons…….can you help me with any suggestions??????

There is only one place, out of all that I have tried that really stood out for true quailty, and that is Celebrityfoods.

If you can help me grow my list of quality services or stores, where I can buy my food, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

I'm going to post this question over at the forum. But I wonder if the store Wild Oats has an online store?

Let's see what people know.

My grocery store has organic section, but it's only in this state. So, it won't be of any help to you.

Lets see what people know about online organics?

Hope it helps you out!
